Bowl Series #17: Canada Day Launch

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

More Canada Day madness: the 17th annual grassroots Bowl Series is having its traditional kick-off at the Seylynn snake-run – Canada’s oldest existing concrete park – in North Vancouver (directions here). Definitely a go-to event, so show up at noon-ish. The boys haven’t released a 2011 poster as of yet, but keep tabs on the Bowl Series 16 Facebook wall for up-to-date info. For now, take a look at last year’s poster to give you an idea of how things will shake out for 2011.

When it comes to gathering at Seylynn, the late and great “Carver” Don Hartley is always on our minds…

Morgan Smith ‘Text Yoself’ & BATB IV Finals

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Morgan Smith handled a little Text Yoself… business at The Berrics, which undoubtedly meant “a crispy-ass tre flip” was involved, along with a “crunchy kickflip” and a past-video-part tribute to Josh Kalis. Watch for yoself by clicking the image…

As you very well know, Morgan is the last remaining Canadian hopeful in the U.S. vs Them format of Battle At The Berrics IV (that’s 4). He’ll be taking on Mike Mo Capaldi for a spot in the Finals this weekend, and as a warm-up you’ll find an edit of Morg’s BATB flatground prowess right here.

Manwolfs in Paris

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Taking part in the Public Domaine art show in Paris, France at La Gaité Lyrique (mentioned as part of the NEXT 25) are the Manwolfs (as seen in the movie Machotaildrop). Rick McCrank is amongst these beasts, who also happen to have a shoe as part of éS Footwear’s Fall 2011 line.

Watch French Fred’s edit of the Manwolfs invading the Paris streets during Go Skateboarding Day right here.

Hashbrown for Cariboo Brew…

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

It started with Corey Klim, then Billy Mitchell, and now Mike “Hashbrown” Schulze is doin’ it for Metro Vancouver’s cheap and palatable Cariboo Brew. Who doesn’t want a case of coldies (wrapped with a Concrete coozie) after a long sesh? This vid (by SixOhForMedia) also provides another glimpse of the refurbished Van Plaza…

It’s On: ‘Real Street’ Fan Fave Voting

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

As mentioned here, X Games 17’s Real Street video contest is underway. In its second year, the format is a little different this time around. Instead of trickling them out, all 16 video parts were released today for fan voting. Tony Hawk and Chris Pastras will announce the fan favourite on July 31st (that winner gets $10,000), and a panel of judges will determine who gets an X Games gold and $50,000 for their 60-second part.

Concrete #110 cover and commercial star Ryan Decenzo joins this year’s heavy hitting crop, which also includes Dylan Rieder, Guru Khalsa, Anthony Schultz, Daewon Song, Silas Baxter-Neal, Louie Barletta, Brandon Westgate, Tom Asta, Tommy Sandoval, Zered Bassett (last year’s fan favourite), Tony Tave, Billy Marks, Darrell Stanton, Eli Reed and Joey Brezinski.

Click here to watch all the parts and vote, but here we’ll pay special attention to fellow countryman Ryan Decenzo…

Etnies – The NEXT 25

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Etnies is celebrating its 25th anniversary in the city where it all began – Paris, France. Pierre-André Senizergues, owner of Etnies, hand-picked 3 creative minds from the brand’s history – Gil Le Bon Delapointe, Mike Manzoori and Yogi Proctor – to create compelling skate-inspired concepts that demonstrate what living, moving and thinking could look like in the next 25 years. The artists’ pieces are on display as part of a skateboard culture exhibition at La Gaîté Lyrique Public Domaine from now until August 7th. Click the image to learn more about the artists and concepts:

Supra Dist. – Go Skate Day Vancouver Part 1

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Dane Collison is a jack-of-all-trades. He’s a contributing writer for Concrete (he hooked up Paul Liliani’s interview in Issue 113), and for his primary gig he runs the team, the video camera and the editing board for Supra Distribution. He was part of the filming trio hustling clips on Go Skateboarding Day, and here’s Part 1 of Supra Dist.’s downtown Vancouver take-over:

Cory Wilson Interview

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Cory Wilson lives nearby in East Van, and I recently paid him a visit to chat about the peripheral things that inspire his skateboarding for (who we’ve teamed up with for Store Wars 2011), such as his photography and the good ‘ol bow-and-arrow. To check out the interview that transpired, along with some skate photos of Cory, click right here.

Welcome Back, Chuck

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Montreal filmer extraordinaire Brian Shannon filmed a sick clip of JS Lapierre for our Issue 112 commercial (check out his interview in the online edition of the mag) and his Bshans blogspot is boasting a visual odyssey called  Welcome Back… Chuck. It stars a back-from-back-injury Charles Rivard, along with JS, Mitch Barrette, Josh Clark and a grip of other familiar MTL faces.

Vancouver Montage: 116th’s Nod to the VX

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Shortly after posting his Liquor Store Rail Warmups vid, David-Wayne Stevens’ (116th Productions) latest output is a sign of the times: parting ways with the ‘ol VX-1000 for some newer technology. Here he pays homage to skateboarding’s video camera of choice for so many years in a VX-driven Vancouver montage featuring Sam Hampton, Mike Ray, Dustin Locke, Jordan Repin, Sascha Daley, Mike “Hashbrown” Schulze, Scott Tyson, Tony Myshlyaev, Domenic Devries, Magnus Hanson, and Jordan Zazula. It’s killer:
